What is SocialFinance.in?

A free question-and-answer community for personal finance in India: income tax, investing (including abroad under LRS), insurance and claims, credit cards, banking, and how to complain effectively to banks, the RBI Ombudsman and the Insurance Ombudsman. It started in 2011 and was relaunched in 2026 with all the original questions and answers kept.

Is the information on the site financial advice?

No. Answers come from community members sharing what they know and have experienced. Rules, rates and products change often, so treat answers as a starting point and confirm with your bank, insurer, a chartered accountant or an adviser before acting. Each question shows when it was asked and answered, so check the date.

Who answers the questions?

Anyone with an account. Many answers come from the site's founder, Pankaj Batra, who writes about personal finance and has been through many bank, credit bureau and insurance disputes himself. Good answers get upvoted, and the person who asked can mark the most helpful one as accepted.

Where do some of the questions come from?

Some questions are posted by the SocialFinance Team account. They're common questions from public discussions and our own experience, rewritten in general terms (without anyone's name or personal details) so the answers can help everyone who searches for them.

How do I ask a good question?

  1. Search first. Your question may already be answered.
  2. Write a specific title, e.g. "How is TCS charged once my LRS remittances cross ₹10 lakh?" rather than "TCS doubt".
  3. Give the context that matters: the financial year, the bank or product, what you've already tried.
  4. Never include personal details such as PAN, Aadhaar, account, card or policy numbers, or phone numbers.
  5. Add one to five relevant tags.

Why isn't my question or answer visible yet?

To keep out spam, new posts are reviewed by moderators before they appear. This usually takes a few hours.

How do reputation and badges work?

You earn reputation when others upvote your questions and answers, or accept your answer. Higher reputation unlocks privileges such as voting, commenting and editing. Badges reward milestones like your first accepted answer. See the badges page.

I had an account on the old SocialFinance.in. Can I still log in?

Yes. Accounts, questions and answers from the old site were carried over. Passwords couldn't be moved, though, so use Forgot password with the email address you used then. If that email no longer works, create a new account.

Can I sign in with Google?

Yes. Use Connect with Google on the login page. If you already have an account with a different email address, sign in with your password first, then go to Settings → Account → My Logins and connect Google, so both lead to the same account.

How do I report something wrong or abusive?

Use the flag option on the post. For anything urgent, or about personal data, email [email protected].

Can I promote my product or service?

No. Promotional posts, referral links and undisclosed affiliations are removed. If you're answering a question about a product you're connected with, say so clearly.

How do I delete my account?

Email [email protected] from your registered address. See the Privacy Policy for what happens to your data and posts.

Are there tools to go with the answers?

Yes. Our sister sites have free tools and guides:

  • Worthify: income tax, LRS remittance, forex GST and USD→INR calculators, plus an EDF generator for service exporters.
  • BimaFiles: health insurance rights, the Insurance Ombudsman and RTI, documented from a real case.
  • pankajbatra.com: longer write-ups on investing abroad, RBI Ombudsman complaints and more.

How do I contact you?
