My employer pays food, fuel, telephone and internet allowances. Which of these are tax-free if I choose the new tax regime?
Under the new regime, most allowances are fully taxable. The exception is reimbursement of actual official expenses:
| Benefit | New regime | Old regime |
|---|---|---|
| Food / meal allowance (fixed amount) | Taxable | Meal-voucher exemption up to the prescribed limit |
| Fuel allowance (fixed amount) | Taxable | Conditional exemptions for official use |
| Telephone / internet as a fixed allowance | Taxable | Taxable |
| Telephone / internet reimbursed against bills for official use | Exempt (Rule 3(7)(ix)) | Exempt |
The key distinction is allowance vs reimbursement: a fixed monthly amount is salary, while reimbursement of actual bills for official work isn't. If your employer can restructure phone and internet as bill-based reimbursement, it becomes tax-free in both regimes.
