My card spend offer wasn't credited because the purchase was converted to EMI. Do I have a case?

I met the spend target for a card offer within the window, but the purchase was converted to EMI afterwards, and now the offer tracker shows zero. Is EMI excluded, and how do I argue it?

It depends on the offer's terms, so don't assert what they say until you've seen them.

  • Get the exact terms. Offer terms are often only in the bank's app, sometimes with screenshots blocked, and can disappear after the campaign. Ask the bank in writing to provide the clause number and verbatim text on EMI transactions. If they can't produce a clause excluding EMI, that helps you. If they can, you've learned it without damaging your credibility.
  • Check the timing. If the purchase was made within the offer window as a normal card transaction and converted to EMI only after the deadline, argue that the qualifying spend happened in the window, and that a later conversion shouldn't remove it retroactively.
  • Check how the merchant recorded the payment. Some marketplaces record card EMI as a separate "instalment" payment type, even though the full amount was charged to your card. Your order history or invoice will show which instrument was recorded.
  • Be precise about who converted it. If you chose EMI at checkout, don't claim the bank did it without your knowledge.

Escalate politely but in writing, then to the Nodal Officer. These cases are winnable when the bank can't show a clear exclusion, and lost quickly when you overstate what the terms say.
