I've heard CCIL FX-Retail lets individuals buy or sell US dollars close to the interbank rate. What is it, what can it be used for, and what role does my bank play?

What is FX-Retail?
For the uninitiated: CCIL FX-Retail is an RBI-backed platform that lets retail customers (individuals and businesses) buy/sell foreign exchange directly at near-interbank rates. Think of it as Zerodha but for USD - you get live market rates with minimal markup, bypassing the bank's own treasury markup, which can be 0.5–2%+ on a typical wire transfer.
Use cases: LRS remittances, sending money abroad for education/travel/investments, and inward remittances for businesses receiving foreign payments.
The catch? You register on CCIL, but your bank has to approve the account, set your trading limits, and decide its "markup" fee. Your bank still acts as the clearing/settlement entity. And that's where the real circus begins.
