penalty for sec 143(1) - late tax deposited in july for AY 2011-12

I have received a letter from IT deptt yesterday for sec 143(1). They have asked explanation why penalty should not be put on me for late payment of self assessment tax which i paid on 4 july 2011. this is for AY 2011-12.please advise why penalty is being put on me for a sum of tax 2400 which i deposited before filing my return for that year as i only got form 16 and 16a in april end. Why is the payment being consideres late.

What penalty will be imposed on me? Is there any justification i can give ti avoid this!

Draft a letter to the Income Tax Officer that you received your Form 16 & Form 16A late as a result of which you were not sure of the exact amount of tax to be paid by you.

They'll accept your request and wont say anything as the amount is very small

You would get form-16 and form-16A only after financial year ends. If you have extra tax payable, it should be computed and paid by you before end of financial year to avoid late payment penalty. If an assessee has income other than salary (for which employer already deducted TDS), its assessee's responsibility to compute and pay remaining taxes on time.

If pending amount payable is less than 10,000 then there is no penalty payable u/s 234B and 234C. But if pending amount is more than this, penalty would be asked for.
