SECTION 80DD for Mentally Ill

Hello Pankaj,

Firstly I will take this opportunity to thank you..as i have been using your tax calculator excel for past 3 years.. and also on behalf of all others who have not had a chance to thank you but are using your services -> please please never ever make those excel calculator sheets a paid service :) OK now my question: I have an elder sister who is 37 yrs and is suffering from Schizophrenia from past 22 years. She is unmarried dependent and always stays at home. 1) Can I a claim deduction under section 80DD. If yes, how/whom to approach. 2) What documents should I produce. Say a certificate from a Doctor at NIMHANS is sufficient to claim for 1 lac exemption? 3) How do we measure the severity of the disability i.e below 80% or not? 4) "not sure if its right platform for this question" >> I have heard that none of the insurance companies provide policies for mentally disabled and if they do, it would be difficult for us to claim for them: how far this is true?

Thanks in advance!

You should get disability certificate from chief medical officer of a Govt hospital. This would be needed in case IT department ask for same once you claim for deduction. Apart from this certificate, you don't need anything else to claim deduction u/s 80DD.

Depending on severity percent specified in medical certificate (medical officer decides severity), you can claim 50,000 or 1 lakh deduction u/s 80DD.

Its true that none of the medical insurance plan covers differently-abled people. All insurance companies run for profit and as soon they see outgo risk in an insurance, they reject application.
