LTA Claim for travel taken on 31st March 2012

I have taken a travel which started on 31st March 2012 and ended on 8th April 2012. My employer states, that this cannot be calimed for FY 2011-2012, since the end date is on 8th April, 2012 and neither for FY 2012-2013, since the start date is on March 31st 2012.

As per my understanding, I can submit the LTA claim for the travel undertaken from Jan 2012 till Dec 2012 during FY 2012-2013 submissions.

Please advise whether this is correct or not. Also, under which section in Form 16 or Form 26AS, I can add this claim, if when I have to file my returns.

Thanks, Divya.

Your employer must accept your claim in FY 2012-13 since travel ended in FY 2012-13. LTA works on calender year and not on financial year basis.

Companies accept on financial year basis to align claims/expenses with financial year.

LTA is exempted u/s 10(5) and Its a employer provided benefit. This exemption would be shown in form-16 provided by employer.

This cannot be claimed directly in income tax return as ITR does not have any fields to provide same.
