Dear Sir, The passport of my Brother-in-Law has ECR stamped on his passport. He is in the UAE on Tourist visa for 1 month. Now he has got a job in Sharjah. I would appreciate if you could guide us how to handle the ECR/ECNR issue. Can it be taken care of while he is in UAE itself or he has to return to India and then process the ECR cancellation procedure? How long may the process take? Your response would be of great help. Until your brother-in-law returns to India, there is no issue.
Once he is back in India, he won't be able to fly back with ECR status on passport. So either he can get passport re-issued there in UAE itself with ECNR status or can get it done once he is back to India.
The process is same as passport re-issue so it may take 45-60 days in normal application.
