Wrong PAN number in payslip

Well this might seem stupid but i submitted the wrong PAN number to my employer. when i recently checked by FORM-16, i found this issue. My bank account shows the correct information. Will i be a tax defaulter as the bank account and my FORM 16 show different numbers. What is my course of action?

You dont have to worry as long as you have filed your returns with the correct PAN. If you have filed e-returns you would not have problem.but if you filed manually and form-16 has to be enclosed, you might have to submit an application alongwith it and mention the error.

the best way out is submit e-returns and provide the correct PAN number. You can in the meantime get it corrected with your office as the error is in your office records. Problem might come when you have to go for loans and submit PAN as proof and also a pay slip as proof where both the numbers would be different. Get a letter from your office about the correct PAN which might be as a proof for anyone asking you the question.

I anticipate no problem as long as you have docs to prove.

It may definitely create some issues in case TDS have been deposited on a wrong PAN. So when you file income tax return, your statements of TDS deduction will be proven wrong in system and IT department may issue a show cause notice.

It will be better if you can request to your assessing officer in writing for updating TDS against your PAN. Also inform your employer regarding same and get a corrected form-16 issued from them once TDS is correctly pointed.

Please check form-26AS to check TDS deduction, it should match what is provided on form-16.

Thanks for the answers!!
