Medical Bills Exemption

Viewed 2557

I missed submiting the medical bills to my company before 31-Mar-2011, hence I was not reimburshed Rs. 15000 (under section 17(2)) , and thus this also does not reflects in Form 16. I have all the original bills , for the amount I spend , between April-2010 and Mar 2011.

Can this amount be claimed while filing ITR now (before 31-July-11)?

Appreciate quick response.

You will get the refund. Recompute your taxes considering Medical bills and that tax will be less than what you have paid. Hence you will get the refund.

deduct Rs 15000 from your taxable income mentioned in Form 16 and then calculate the taxes.

Although there is no option of specifying deduction for medical reimbursements in income tax return, you may claim deduction, as suggested by @Amit91.

Medical reimbursements is a employer provided benefit and generally deduction for it, can only be taken from employer. Income tax department may send query to you to provide additional proofs to prove the deduction and refund.
