LTA for lcoal taxi and bus travel

Hi Pankaj, Recently I traveled to Himachal Pradesh from my home town Bangalore. I had planned as below

1) Bangalore - Delhi - Bangalore by flight ==> Was approved in the first go

2) Delhi - Manali, Manali - Shimla, Shimla - Delhi ==> Was approved after a struggle where I proved that there are no trains b/n above stations and HPTDC buses do fall under "Public tranport system". I had referred authentic www.incometaxindia.gov.in to prove my point.

3) Local sight seeing in HPTDC buses ==> Was 'not' approved saying only long distances are covered. Can you please provide any authentic info site where there is definition of how long is "long distance" to be claimed successfully?

4) Upon landing in Manali I decided to cancel two of the four HPTDC buses and travel by HPTDC recognised taxis due to comfort concerns. Can this be claimed under LTA?

There is no as such long distance rule. But LTA generally is only provided for to and fro travel between two cities. Local sightseeing is not covered under LTA.

Taxis bills cannot be claimed under LTA if a public transport exists.

Thanks for the quick response. Honestly I didn't expect a response at all. :) I should have clarified earlier. Local sight seeing in HPTDC bus means as follows.

1) Dist from Manali city to Manikaran is 60 kms (1 way) and it costs Rs. 330/adult 2) Dist from Manali city to Chail-Kufri is around 35-40 kms (1 way) and it costs Rs. 280/adult (to&fro)

If taxis bills are not claimable, I read in www.incometaxindia.gov.in equivalent of rail travel for that distance can be claimed. Am I recalling right? Both Manikaran and Kufri are small towns which you are probably already aware of. Thanks Kamalesh

Taxi bills are not claimable but rail/bus fare on same route can be claimed for same. Even if you claim taxi bills, maximum exemption will be public transport fare. E.g. if taxi expense on Manali-Manikaran route is 330/adult and bus fare is 30 Rs/adult then only 30 Rs will be non-taxable.
