Tax on medical treatment

Hi Pankaj

My father is 56 years old and is Haryana Govt. employee. In 2010-11 he have paid Rs 145000/- for his Chronic disease ( Heart and Renel failure) treatment. This amount is reimburseable and Haryana Govt will pay this amount to my father. Is this amount is tax free. How much amount incurred on medical Chronic disease treatment. Can we claim the medical tratment for tax benefits.

With regards

As this amount is received against actuals spent for medical treatment, this will be tax free. He spent some amount and received that back from Govt. There is no extra income, so there is no question of income tax on it.

Under section 80-DDB, If the amount would not have been reimbursed, there would have a income tax exemption on amount spent on treatment. But max limit is only Rs 40,000 for people below 65 years of age.
